Junya Watanabe’s fall 2007 collection referenced motorcycle culture as literally as it could have — the opening four looks contained models donning biker helmets — yet the show managed to hint at several different subcultures which claim the leather biker jacket as a staple. There are perhaps few pieces of clothing so rich in subtext, as it has at different times symbolized a litany of manifestations of youthful alienation, including BDSM, biker gangs, punk rock, and skinhead culture. Numerous aspects of each were mashed together here, including the slender, zipper-heavy plaid pants of yesteryear’s punks, and a collaboration with Vanson, a brand emblematic of post-war biker gangs. Further nuance was added with a collaboration from Barbour, a brand often donned by professional motorcycle racers.

British punk rockers of the ‘70s have always been a muse of Watanabe, and a direct line to them can be drawn from these plaid pants, which are made with a winter wool and zippers scattered asymmetrically across the thighs.
