Vogue described Gaultier’s SS1994 runway as “a startling vision of cross-cultural harmony.” The sprawling season featured references across time and place; from one look to the next Gaultier harkened to Joan of Arc, modern-day street punks, and his one-time protégé Martin Margiela.

Throughout his career, Jean Paul Gaultier found himself aligned with unfairly maligned parts of society. He adopted heavy metal imagery during an era when public backlash against Marilyn Manson was at a fervor, and powerfully took a public stance against AIDS, which claimed his longtime lover. It is logical that he would have appreciated graffiti as an artistic medium long before the general public. While it was a key visual aesthetic of the ‘90s, serving as a method of art and rebellion, it was often looked down upon by the art world and general public. These jeans feature graffiti etchings, and were one of several pieces from spring 1994 to do so.
